Drabble: One More

My response to the prompt overworked.

Genre: fantasy
~One More~

They were both exhausted, but they still had so much work left to do.

“Hang in there bud.” He patted his familiar. The enchanted griffin didn’t have the energy to reply with anything but a weak trill.

“One more. Then we’ll take a break.” He pressed his palms against the magical array. His familiar wrapped its tail around his arm.

They fed their energy into the array. Symbol by symbol, the intricate pattern lit up. Halfway through, black spots popped up before his eyes, but he pressed on. By the time they finished the enchantment, he was practically blind.

He leaned back in his chair and rested a hand on the griffin’s back.

“Good work.”

The griffin bumped its head against his arm in reply.

“New order!” announced his parrot familiar.

“Put it on the table. I’ll deal with it later.”

He closed his eyes. Just one more step to go, then the project would be done, and would have enough money to create another familiar to help him.

But first, a break. They both deserved it.
