Drabble: In All Seriousness

“In all seriousness“, his aunt likes to say before saying the most ridiculous things that are anything but serious. When he was younger, he believed everything she said, especially when she started a statement like that. Now he’s older and wiser, and “In all seriousness” is his cue to disbelieve every word she says afterwards.

So when she announces during the family gathering, “In all seriousness, I’ll give you my business as your birthday present”, he and everyone else treats it like a joke.

Until his birthday comes along, and she actually drops her large, multi-national business into his hands, right before the annual general meeting.

“All the best.” His aunt pats his back and vanishes to some tropical island with a name he can’t pronounce.

He wishes, in all seriousness, that the floor would open up and swallow him whole.

~End~

I started this story only knowing that I wanted to have the phrase ‘in all seriousness’ in it, then fumbled the rest of the way until the end :p

Genre: general, slice of life, family?
