Drabble: The Day Before

Her eyes glittered with unshed tears. He gently cupped her face and ran a thumb over her cheek.

She burst into laughter. He followed his gaze to the tree doing a funny dance behind him.

“Stop that!”The president pointed at the tree with the script. “There’s no time to waste. The festival is tomorrow.”

“Don’t worry Pres. We got this,” the tree said.

“No. We don’t got this until the play is over.”

They watched their president spiral into a silent meltdown, then shifted their attention to the vice-president.

“Let’s take a break. Ten minutes. Don’t go anywhere.” The vice-president looked at the tree. “Except for you. You can disappear now.”

“Sweet. See you tomorrow.” The tree ditched his costume in a second and dashed out the door.

“I was joking!” the president yelled after him, but he was already gone.

He looked around the room, from the discarded tree costume to the panicking president to the main actress who randomly burst into giggles. He sighed.

Tomorrow was going to be fun.
