Short Story: Not Today

Genre: fantasy

“Everyone cheered, but he was the happiest of them all. After all his hard work, he was finally the champion. Yay!”

“Yay!” the little boy cheered with her.

“Now, bedtime,” she said.

He groaned but obediently laid down beside her. Her arms closed protectively around him as she hummed a soft tune.

In moments, he was asleep.

With a sigh, she released her illusion. The warm blanket fort melted into cold bars and empty walls.

Eventually, the little boy she was babysitting would realise they weren’t actually at an overly long sleepover.

But not today.
