Short Story: Safe Secrets

They found her in the deepest cell, in a trance that left her mind blank and her body unresponsive. In her three weeks of captivity, she had kept their secrets safe. Because of her efforts, their mission had been a success and the invaders were driven out of their land.

As the rest of their people rejoiced, they mourned over the steep price they had paid.

“What do we do now?”

The looked at the frail, limp body beside them. The leader clenched his fist.

“We take care of her. Just like she took care of us.”

They thumped their fist against their heart.

“Yes, chief!”
