Short Story: Toxic Land

Theirs was a difficult place to live in. The animals they hunted were toxic, the plants they harvested were toxic, and so were the people. Kindness was a high price to pay when the land was so unforgiving and even the basic necessities of life had to be fought over tooth and nail.

But this stranger didn’t seem to understand that simple concept.

He smiled easily, gave easily, helped easily. Among the hardened people, his generosity stood out. Yet, despite all the things and time he gave, he never ran out.

Why does he do it? How can he keep going?

She wondered as she observed from a distance. Out of sight, but never far.

Maybe, if she watched long enough, she would learn his secret, and she would never need to worry about the toxic land she lived in.
