NaNoWriMo 2019 Chapter 28 (Final chapter)

Disclaimer: This is a NaNoWriMo attempt where quantity trumps quality. This will also be a long piece, so if you’re looking for a quick read, I recommend checking out a different category like Short Stories.

~Chapter 28 Half a Year Later~

Half a year ago, an elite monster stepped through the tear between their worlds into Morning Song’s hunting ground. They faced it with a team of eight, only for the elite monster to wipe out half their team.

This time, a new elite monster has stepped through again, this time through the tear under Echo’s guard.

Last time, Echoes lost a guild member when he came over to help them with their elite monster. It was time to return the favour.

With Shatterstrike’s help, they now have an elite hunting team specifically for times like this. Individually, they aren’t strong enough to stand before an elite monster, but what they lack in power, they have strategy to cover for each other’s weaknesses.

She, too, has improved greatly since the last time she fought an elite monster. This time, she will make sure they don’t lose anyone in the process.

Echoes is normally a 10 minute drive away, but in the past few months, they have uncovered a very convenient hidden ability in their guild.

A large circle of light etches itself into the ground. Sherri steps in, followed by the rest of their elite hunting team.

Her little sister’s emph can transport people from one place to another. They have already practised the skill in the past to cut down the travel time between their guild and Shatterstrike. This is half the distance. Even if her little sister has never been to Echoes’ hunting ground before, Sherri is confident that her little sister can send them through.

Lex steps into the circle.

“I’ll come with you,” Lex says.

She looks at the man with conflicting thoughts. On one hand, having another strong fighter like Lex on their side will greatly increase the odds of their success. But she still remembers the last time she fought an elite monster with the help of members from Shatterstrike. She doesn’t want history to repeat itself.

But the outline of the circle is already growing upwards into a wall that will meet above them to form a dome. It’s too late for Lex to leave now.

“I’ll make sure I live,” Lex says quietly to Sherri as the dome closes over them.

She presses her lips together. Lex is more than capable of taking care of himself. She’s being unreasonable.

The tightness in her chest doesn’t go away, but she gives him a nod in reply.

The dome unfolds to deposit them on Echoe’s hunting ground. Before their eyes, the elite monster steps free from the tear.

She runs towards the elite monster.

The goal hasn’t changed. Zero casualties. She will accept nothing less.

She calls to her emph.

“I won’t be moved.”
