The lights blink out without warning, plunging them into darkness.
“Is it a blackout?”
“Where are the candles?”
“Hey, someone’s phone is on the floor. Better pick it up before we step on it.”
“That’s weird. The neighbours still have power.”
Voices rise like waves as everyone reacts to the disruption to their movie marathon.. Taking advantage of the chaos, she hurries out of the living room towards a faint silver of light in the laundry.
She finds exactly what she expects.
A black rodent the size of a basketball looks up guiltily, sharp teeth still still digging into the wires in mid-gnaw.
“How many times do I need to tell you not to eat the power cables?” she scolds.
The magical being doesn’t let go.
It’ll be bad if her friends stumble in. She raises her fingers and narrows her eyes. “We’ll talk about this later.”
A quick gesture makes the beast disappear from sight. Without the rodent feasting on the power, the lights flicker back on.
She’ll deal with her unruly pet later. For now, it’s time to relax with her friends.
