Short Story: The Path to Restoration

He looks over the filthy, dilapidated house with undisguised disdain.

Just two years ago, this was a brand new house fitted with advanced furnishings and finishes for modern living. He’d gone all out, since it was meant to be his primary residence, but an unexpected job offer had him moving to a different state, so he rented out his property instead.

He has already swapped to a new property management agency. Even though they found him great tenants, they didn’t realize those tenants passed away in a natural disaster while travelling half a year ago. The tenants had set up an auto debit for their rent, but the vacant house became an enticing hideout for illegal squatters that had absolutely no respect for his property and thrashed it into it’s current sorry state.

It’s heart breaking to see how far his dream home has fallen, but now that he has a new job in the area, he’ll personally see to it that the building will be restored to its former glory.

Brows furrowed in determination, he opens his email inbox and starts looking up the contacts he worked with the first time.
