His theory was that if he got better, succeeded more, became a better person, she would love him.

But trying to be better only made things worse, his projects just couldn’t seem to take off, and his attempts to be a better person only made everyone miserable. All he had to show for his efforts was despair and a long string of failures.

She sat down beside him and pulled him to her side.

“Oh son. You don’t need to torment yourself. I already love you.”
